Nest With The Birds Draws Record Influx of Warblers – and Visitors

It was a bonanza of birds at this year’s Kelleys Island Audubon (KIAC) sponsored Nest With The Birds, held on Jones Preserve at Long Point May 17th.

The event includes a morning of bird-banding by Tom and Paula Bartlett. Bird banding is crucial for studying bird migration patterns, behavior, population size and survival rates. By placing unique, numbered aluminum bands on legs, researchers can monitor health, identify stopover sites for conservation, track environmental contaminants (like pesticides) and manage species populations.

The banding site drew visitors young and old from nearby and out of state, including members from an Arizona chapter of the Audubon Society. In total the station banded 246 birds representing 29 different species. It was one of the top days ever on Kelleys Island or any island where the Bartletts conduct banding.

KIAC also offered birds for adoption during the event. Participants could sponsor a banded bird of their choosing. Any time that bird is recaptured or counted, the adoptive parent will receive notification.
