KILA Korner

The season got off to a great start Saturday May 16 with the KILA Welcome Potluck dinner. The VFW hosted the group in their pavilion, and people enjoyed Bassett’s fried chicken, many delicious dishes, and lots of good company and camaraderie. Kudos to Jennifer Pieratt for organizing this island tradition.

The same weekend KILA sponsored “Dumpster Days.” Many KILA members were able to take care of disposing their scrap metal, mattresses, and other items. Chris Arnold, Frank Dodson, and Carl Scheu volunteered for the event and assisted landowners with unloading their “junk.”

During the KILA Board of Directors meeting May 16 it was decided to extend the acceptance of proposals for assistance to fund island projects. See www.kila.rocks under the link “About” for details as to how to apply for funding.

Also, during the meeting Board of Directors member and Village Council member Chris Kipfer discussed the
village ordinance regarding lot sizes. KILA wishes to thank Council for responding to our letter requesting clarification on the proposed ordinance. The prompt response allowed us to get information to the landowners about Council’s intent, and the subsequent wording change in the ordinance grandfathers lots purchased prior to the adoption of the ordinance.

The next KILA meeting is June 20 at 10:00am at Estes School, and it is open to the public. Don’t forget to pay your annual dues to keep your membership active. Dues are $25 for new members and $20 for current members. Dues can be mailed to KILA, PO Box 22, Kelleys Island 43438. There is also a dues application with more options for payment in KILA’s ad in this edition of Life on Kelleys.

Mark your calendars for the 52nd Homecoming festival and parade this August 7&8. Raffle tickets are now available for $20 each from Board of Directors members. The highly accoladed fish fry dinner will be at the Community Park Pavilion Friday August 7, and tickets will be sold in advance. Saturday will kick off with a parade, and the rest of the day at the Pavilion will include food, entertainment, games, and vendors. Many thanks to Shores and Islands Ohio for helping to sponsor this island event.
