Getting Boat-Ready Starts with the Right Coverage

April showers bring May flowers, but on the Shores & Islands of Ohio, spring also signals that boating season is right around the corner. With longer days and rising temperatures, local marinas and waterways begin to fill with eager boaters ready to get back on the water.

As you prepare your boat for another summer of fun, whether that means power washing, waxing, or engine maintenance, don’t forget to review your insurance coverage. Having the right protection in place can help ensure that one unexpected incident doesn’t sink your entire season.

Review Your Coverage Amounts

Liability coverage protects you financially if you’re responsible for causing injury to someone else or damage to their property while operating your boat. It’s an essential part of any watercraft policy. Are your policy limits enough?

When it comes to protecting your own boat or personal watercraft, there are several coverage options to consider:

Total Loss Replacement – Replaces your boat with a new, previously untitled vessel of the same make and model, as closely as possible, with comparable equipment.

Agreed Value – Pays the value listed on your declarations page (minus your deductible), regardless of depreciation at the time of loss.

Actual Cash Value – Typically the most affordable option, this coverage pays based on your boat’s market value, age, and condition at the time of loss, up to the cost to repair or replace it.

Evaluate Your Deductible

Choosing a higher deductible can help lower your insurance premium. Consider whether you would file a claim for a smaller loss, such as under $1,000. If not, increasing your deductible could be a cost-effective option.

Don’t Overlook Fishing Equipment If you added new gear over the winter, make sure it’s properly covered. Many policies include limited coverage for fishing equipment, so it’s important to confirm your limits and ensure they reflect the value of your investment.

Towing and Emergency Services

Breakdowns on the water can be costly. Many policies offer optional coverage for towing and emergency services, including jump-starts, fuel delivery, disentanglement, and soft ungrounding. This coverage can provide valuable peace of mind while you’re out on the water.
